Central American Women's Network sheds light on women in Honduras crisis

July 14, 2009

The Central American Women’s Network (CAWN) has been working to bring attention to the plight of women in Honduras after the June 28 military coup in that country.

In a July 10 press release CAWN provides a detailed account of the violent impact of the military coup on women, stating “We are seriously concerned that the political participation of women and women’s organisations is being threatened and their protests have been suppressed. This is putting their lives at risk."

The London-based CAWN is also calling on the UK government to ensure the peaceful withdrawal of the soldiers to their barracks, the safety and protection of civilians from any reprisals, and the freezing of all trade and aid from the UK to the government of Honduras until the crisis is resolved.
