The National: Made in Canada
CBC-TV, 2004
12 minutes
This CBC report explores the working conditions of garment workers in Toronto and Vancouver. It profiles two women who work in garment workshops that only employ immigrants who are unable to find work elsewhere. This video shows footage from inside the workshops and, through the stories told by the women, recreates the conditions experienced by workers.
Made in Canada is aimed at informing an older audience who already knows about sweatshops but may not know about their presence in Canada. The video should be introduced with a brief discussion about the global problem of labour rights violations and the myths surrounding sweatshops. It might also be helpful to highlight some differences between Canada and countries commonly associated with sweatshops, particularly with respect to the implementation of labour laws.
