Hong Kong-based SACOM says explosion at Foxconn plant 'not accidental'

May 24, 2011

Family members reactStudents & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) has released a statement blaming a May 20 explosion at Foxconn's Ipad plant on the company, which it says is putting productivity over worker safety. The blast, which killed two workers and injured 16, could have been prevented, says SACOM. The group points to an early May report in which it raised issues with dangerous aluminum dust in the factory's polishing department where the blast occurred. Regrettably, Foxconn ignored SACOM's findings as it does criticisms and recommendations from other labour rights groups.

"After the spate of suicides, the blast also affirms Foxconn puts producing the iPad before workers' lives," the group said in its statement. SACOM is demanding that Foxconn set up an independent investigation of the explosion and hold any management responsible accountable for what happened.
