Strengthening Southern Voices - 2010 Highlights

June 6, 2011

MSN works with Southern partners to strengthen their capacity to document worker rights abuses and effectively engage with and pressure companies and governments to respect worker rights.

  • In October, MSN sponsored a workshop on women's health issues in the maquilas in Aguascalientes which included members of local grassroots labour rights groups like Colectivo Raiz and Colectivo Obreras Insumisas (Tehuacan, Puebla). Lead by a Mexican health and safety expert, the session looked at identifying common repetitive stress injuries that affect maquila workers (see article 2, MSN Newsletter 15.3).
  • In collaboration with local partners in Tehuacan, MSN updated our research and analysis of trends in that city's jean manufacturing industry. The report, published in English and Spanish in December 2010, presents a series of proposals to brands - both national and international - that we will be following up on in 2011.
